Zoutpan ostrich farm

DE-STRESS AND RELAX IN THIS WARMLY WELCOMING FARM ATMOSPHERE.

Today primarily because we all find ourselves in a highly stressful, fast-paced environment, it is essential to break away from it all, to de-stress and enjoy a simpler, slower lifestyle - if only for a short time. If this describes you, then you ought to consider the charm, peace and tranquility of Zoutpan Struishuis Guest Farm.

Zoutpan farmhouse

Apart from the wide open vistas and breath-taking sunsets, Zoutpan boasts some of the finest examples of the unique collection of about 6,800 species of Cape fynbos (Cape Floral Kingdom) that grow only in this area of South Africa, plus approximately 150 different species of birds and endemic thatching reed that is an alternate source of income for the farm. Riding amongst the Thatching Reed

Whether travelling on business or for pleasure our facility will suit your requirements.

At Zoutpan Struishuis Guest Farm you will experience the warm Afrikaner hospitality of Engela and Bertie Horn in their stylishly decorated Cape Dutch apartment units. If you choose to dine 'at home', you will also experience 'boerekos' at its best.

You can participate in the normal farm activities, like the collection of ostrich eggs, milking of cows and feeding of orphaned lambs or horseriding. You will also find 1000 ostriches at any time on the farm, 180 birds of which will be breeding.

Carved Ostrich eggAlthough ostriches are generally thought of for primarily providing decorative feathers, Zoutpan Struishuis Guest Farm also provides leather and meat for the export market while there is great demand for the eggshells for artistic purposes. The leather is prized for its distinctive appearance, suppleness and durability, while the feathers are used in the fashion industry and in high-tech industries because of their ability to attract dust - this magnet-like attribute makes ostrich feathers a "must" in keeping computer rooms dust free, and in the automotive industry, preparing cars for the painting process.

Let Engela introduce you to the Arabian horses. Breeding Arabians is another of the programmes on the farm and the elegant, proud horses seen on the farm werf will delight your senses. Take a visit to the salt pans, after which the farm is named and cast your eyes over the array of wild geese and other water fowl which tend to congregate here.

If this is not to your liking, you can relax in the beautiful communal lounge and reading area, explore the area by enjoying walking trails in the fynbos, do some bird watching, or take scenic sundowner drives, watching the African Sunset while sipping on sundowners at the lovely rock-pool, and enjoying a magical evening around an open log-fire.

For the fisherman...bring your tackle! On the adjacent farm is a delightful area complete with ancient fish traps. Here the angling is really good, or take a drive down to Stillbay at the mouth of the Goukou River. If you are lucky, you will probably catch sight of an endangered species, the black oyster-catcher.

Wonderful farm dinner(s) by prior arrangement, or eat at any one of a number of great restaurants, all within a reasonable distance.

The Staff

Your friendly hosts will be Bertie and Engela Horn. They have been married since 1979 and have been living on Zoutpan ever since. Bertie is a farmer and has a passion for this way of life. He is a keen observer and is sensitively tuned in to nature. It is quite a fascinating experience to listen to him (if you are lucky to get him) as he conducts a tour of the ostrich farm.

Engela was born in Ceres and raised on a fruit farm. She met Bertie while teaching in Albertinia. Currently she is handling the breeding branch of Zoutpan farming. She shares Bertie’s love for country living and creates a warm and relaxed atmosphere where family and friends love to come back to.

They have four beautiful children, who also enjoy the farm life and they have respective daily chores to conduct.

The farm workers have been living here for generations and are treated as old friends, and looked after especially well.
