About the Zoutpan Team

Your friendly hosts, third generation farmers at Zoutpan, will be Engela and Bertie Horn. The couple have been married since 1979 and have been living on Zoutpan Ostrich Farm ever since. Bertie is a farmer with a passion for this way of life. He is a keen observer, sensitively tuned in to nature. It is a fascinating experience to listen to him (if you are lucky to find him) as he conducts a tour of the ostrich farm.

Engela was born in Ceres and raised on a fruit farm. She met Bertie while teaching in Albertinia. Currently she handles the breeding side of Zoutpan farming, and shares Bertie’s love for country living, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere which draws family and friends back, time and again.

The couple have four children, who also enjoy the farm life and contribute towards the daily chores.

Worker families have been living here for generations and have become old friends who are looked after especially well.
